The Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians has announced the acquisition of Mad River Brewery from the Yurok Tribe in Northwestern California. Based in Blue Lake, California, Mad River Brewery has been brewing for 35 years and prides itself on quality and commitment to environmental stewardship.
This acquisition follows the Paskenta Tribe’s establishment of The Paskenta Brewery and Distillery in November 2021, making it the inaugural tribal-owned distillery in California. By incorporating Mad River Brewery into their fold, the Paskenta Tribe further diversifies its economic ventures.
Tribal Chairman Andrew “Dru” Alejandre emphasized the significance of this move, stating, “Acquiring Mad River Brewery is another milestone in Paskenta’s commitment to building an economically sustainable future for our tribe and serving as an economic growth driver for our neighbors.” He added, “We’re honored to extend our expertise in blending tribal identity and craft beer to the Northern California community and tribes across the nation. As we continue to innovate, we proudly lead the way in crafting beers and spirits within Indian Country.”
Mad River Brewery made history in 2019 by becoming one of the pioneering Tribal Breweries in the United States, establishing itself as a trailblazer in the craft beer industry. Notably, it formed a partnership with a professional baseball team, making its hand-crafted beverages a fixture at San Francisco Giants home games at Oracle Park. Over the years, Mad River Brewery has garnered numerous local, national, and international awards, including accolades from the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival.
Linda Cooley, CEO of Mad River Brewery, expressed her satisfaction with the acquisition, saying, “It fills my heart to know the business will remain in tribal hands and continue supporting the tribal community. I have no doubt Mad River Brewery will continue its growth with this Paskenta Partnership.”
The Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians, known for owning Rolling Hills Casino & Resort, has been a significant contributor to the local economy, employing over 500 team members and supporting various community programs through grants and sponsorships. Similarly, Mad River Brewery, a women-led independent craft brewery based in Humboldt County, California, has garnered a reputation for brewing high-quality beers over its three-decade history.
As the Paskenta Tribe takes the helm of Mad River Brewery, it not only expands its economic footprint but also underscores its commitment to sustainable economic development and community support. With both entities sharing a dedication to excellence and community engagement, the acquisition sets the stage for continued growth and collaboration in the vibrant craft beverage industry.
