Tröegs Independent Brewing has announced the return of Field Study Summer IPA, the second beer in its rotating seasonal series.
The beer was inspired by the brewery’s annual trip to Washington state’s Yakima Valley for hop selection. It was originally developed through Tröegs’ small-batch Scratch Series, with its first iteration as Scratch #327. Brewmaster and co-founder John Trogner explains that the brewing team experimented with new hopping techniques before finalizing the recipe.
After multiple trials, Tröegs selected a combination of Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado hops, aiming for notes of ripe grapefruit, pear, and melon. The beer’s grain bill includes a portion of rustic pale malt grown and harvested in Pennsylvania, sourced from Double Eagle Malt near Philadelphia.
“We like using local ingredients because it’s easy to try them,” says Trogner. “It’s fun to go out in the fields, get our hands a little dirty, and taste the raw ingredients before we use them in a beer.”
With a 6.2% ABV, a bright flavor profile, and low bitterness, Field Study is designed to appeal to both IPA enthusiasts and those who may not typically gravitate toward the style.
Field Study Summer IPA is available on draft and in 12-ounce bottles and cans throughout Tröegs’ distribution network. It will also be included in the brewery’s updated Perpetual Exploration variety pack for summer, which will be available starting next week wherever Tröegs beer is sold.
